Processing Can Take Longer Than Usual During Peak Season

Applications pile up over the summer peak, so decisions can exceed the published timescales - leave extra room in your plans.

  • Updated 2026.08.05

Why it takes longer

Applications are concentrated around the summer holidays and the period before the academic year begins. At these times, decisions can exceed the published standard processing times, and it may take longer still if additional documents need to be examined or submitted documents need to be verified.

When planning your schedule

  1. Count back from your departure date and apply at least 4 weeks in advance.
  2. It is safer to confirm flights and accommodation only after you have the decision.
  3. For group travel, base your planning on whoever in the group applied last.

If the timescale has passed

While you are still within the published processing time, there is no need to contact anyone separately to check on progress. If the timescale has passed and you have heard nothing, please check the enquiry procedure.

Please note

Processing times vary by application type and by where you apply. For details on how to check, see the How to check a UK visa application page.
